Large, meaty, soft, deep-green leaves and strong, crisp stalks are characteristics of Swiss chard. Chard and spinach are unrelated, but chard has a flavour that is stronger, more aggressive, or, as some people believe, bitter, than spinach.
The stalks and ribs of different varieties of chard come in a variety of colours, including white, golden-orange, red (also known as ruby or rhubarb chard), and even rainbow chard. Although there isn't much of a flavour difference, ruby chard occasionally has a stronger flavour.
